CCI initiates investigation into Google’s Play Store billing policies.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has directed an investigation into Google’s Play Store billing policies following concerns raised by Indian companies. In a 21-page order, the antitrust regulator stated that it believes Google may have violated provisions of the Competition Act, warranting a detailed probe into the matter.
On March 1, Google removed hundreds of apps from its app marketplace, including those from ten companies like Info Edge, People Interactive, and Matrimony, citing violations of its billing policies. However, after intervention from the Indian government, Google reinstated these apps on the Play Store.
The issue is also under consideration by the Supreme Court, with the next hearing scheduled for March 19.
“We are reviewing CCI’s order initiating the investigation. Previously, the CCI extensively examined our service fee between 2020 and 2022 and found no wrongdoing. Nonetheless, we are committed to complying with local laws and regulations in India and will fully cooperate with the process,” stated a spokesperson for Google.
The CCI has tasked its director-general with conducting the probe and submitting a report within 60 days.
