The police fired 11 rounds and resorted to tear gassing to disperse Congress (I) demonstrators who set up road blockades and burnt buses in Calcutta, demanding the release of three leaders arrested by the Calcutta police. Congress (I) leaders said that two of their party workers were killed in the police firing. No official confirmation was available.

Kashmir Bandh

The ruling National Conference and its youth wing have given a call for a Kashmir bandh to protest against the assault on the Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, in Calcutta and Delhi recently. The National Conference has called upon the people of the Valley to make the bandh a success, appealing to traders and business establishments to close their shops and offices in protest.

Indo-Pak Trade

Pakistan and India have reiterated their desire to substantially increase bilateral trade and have identified a large number of items for bulk trading. The two sides signed a joint statement on the conclusion of the three-day joint sub-commission talks. India and Pakistan’s commerce secretaries, Abid Hussain, and Izharul Haq respectively signed the statement.

Indo-French N-deal

France is understood to be willing to forgo the safeguards clause in the supply of French nuclear components to India and in the sharing of its fast-breeder technology. The French government seems to have given the go-ahead for French companies to participate in tenders floated by India for nuclear components, according to informed sources in Paris.
