Packed with vitamin C, oranges add an antioxidant punch to this treat. “Vitamin C strengthens immunity, combats free radicals, and promotes collagen production for healthy skin. Fresh oranges provide dietary fibre, aiding digestion and potentially promoting gut health. This can be particularly beneficial if paired with other digestive-friendly ingredients like nuts or seeds,” Dr Rohatgi said.

However, like any other sweet, Orange Barfi, should be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. “Consider portion control and opt for homemade versions using low-fat milk and minimal sweeteners for a guilt-free indulgence,” the expert advises.

Ingredients

  • 750 gms orange pulp
  • 50 gms sugar
  • 100 gms desiccated coconut
  • Orange food colour
  • 250 gms khoya
  • Silver work for the finishing touch

Method

  1. Begin by peeling all the oranges, ensuring the removal of skin and seeds. Place the extracted pulp into a pan.
  2. Cook the orange pulp in the pan, adding sugar and a splash of orange food colouring for that vibrant hue. Feel free to skip the food colouring if you prefer a more natural look.
  3. Introduce desiccated coconut and orange zest into the simmering mixture, enhancing both flavour and texture.
  4. Incorporate the milk solids or khoya into the cooking mixture. Allow the ingredients to blend and cook thoroughly, creating a harmonious fusion of tastes.
  5. Prepare a tray and transfer the cooked mixture into it, ensuring an even spread. For a touch of elegance, top the dish with delicate silver work.
  6. Allow the Orange Barfi to set for a minimum of 3-4 hours. Once perfectly set, cut it into your desired shapes and sizes.
