The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has commenced the process of hiring an expert, who will be able to provide firefighting assistance, rescue vehicles, and ambulances, along with managing their operations on the upcoming Mumbai Trans Harbour Sealink (MTHL).
The sealink, named ‘Atal Bihari Vajpyaee Sewri Navha Sheva Atal Setu’ in honor of the late Indian Prime Minister, is set to significantly enhance infrastructure development in previously underserved areas of Navi Mumbai and Raigad district.
The MMRDA has issued a tender, inviting competitive bids from potential service providers. “Initially, the MMRDA plans to deploy three firefighting and rescue vehicles and two ambulances to respond promptly to any emergencies or untoward incidents on the sealink once it opens to traffic,” said an official from the MMRDA. Interested bidders are required to submit their proposals by December 5, with the opening of the bids scheduled for December 6.
The duration of the contract is for seven years. Prospective bidders must furnish a bank guarantee of Rs 10 lakh to participate in the tender process, as stipulated by the MMRDA.
Furthermore, the MMRDA has mandated that bidders should have a proven track record of providing fire and rescue emergency services to public, government, or semi-government organizations for a minimum of five years.
Additionally, bidders should demonstrate an average turnover of Rs 54 crore over the last three years and showcase experience in executing similar projects, deploying a minimum of four to five rescue vehicles on a six-lane highway or expressway.

The MTHL project, with an estimated cost of Rs 18,000 crore, spans 21.8km, with 16km over the sea. The alignment of the sealink begins at Sewri in South Mumbai and terminates at Chirle in Raigad district.
Currently, the distance between Sewri and Chirle is 52 km. The project is reported to be over 96% complete, and it is anticipated to open to traffic early next year.
The bridge will have moving dividers every 30 meters so the staffers manning the bridge will facilitate the vehicles in taking a U-turn in case of extreme emergency. The sea bridge is being built on about 1,089 pillars comprising hybrid 1,550mm crash barriers.
