Samsung unveiled its first-ever generative AI model at the Samsung AI Forum 2023. Called ‘Samsung Gauss’, the large language model can understand human language and answer questions.
The AI can also generate text and images, help write and edit emails, and summarise documents with Samsung claiming that it can even double up as a coding assistant.
Developed by Samsung Research, the tech giant’s research arm, parts of Samsung Gauss can run locally on devices like smartphones and tablets. It consists of three tools: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code and Samsung Gauss Image.

While Samsung Gauss Language can understand human language and answer user queries similar to ChatGPT, Samsung Gauss Code works with the company’s code assistant called ‘code.i’ and helps with code generation. According to Samsung, the AI model can help with “code description and test case generation through an interactive interface.”
As for Samsung Gauss Image, the tool helps users generate images from text, help with photo editing and convert low-resolution images to high resolution. The tech giant says Samsung Gauss is currently being used internally by company employees to boost productivity, but will soon be available on a wide range of products in the future.
Samsung might integrate Samsung Gauss with its upcoming Galaxy S24 flagship series, which might be launched sometime in January next year. The tech giant recently introduced generative AI functionalities to its in-house developed voice assistant – Bixby, which according to the company can understand context even if the user does not use a predefined command.
