The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Tuesday wrote to Water Supply and Water Resource Minister Kunwarji Bavaliya, seeking intermittent release of water from Wanakbori and Kadana dams on Mahisagar river to “wash away” possible chemical contamination on the surface of the river water near the four frenchwells from where Vadodara draws drinking water.
VMC Standing Committee chairman Dr Sheetal Mistry, along with Mayor Pinky Soni and other civic officials visited the Rayka and Dodka french wells on Tuesday. They were accompanied by Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) officials, who took samples for test, following complaints by the Congress that pigmented water was being supplied to the city.
Mistry said that the “primary report” of the GPCB on Tuesday “ruled out chemical contamination” as the water quality is “within permissible limits”.
“We have received complaints of yellow pigmentation and green pigmentation of water. So, we visited the frenchwells and instructed the GPCB to take samples of the four french wells… The primary report has indicated no chemical pollution with the sample recording 10 units while the permissible limit is in the range of 6 to 15,” she said.
“Even the PH was at around 8, within the permissible range of 6.5 to 8.5. The turbidity was recorded between 127 and 132 at four frenchwells… the permissible level is 200. The presence of ammonia should be less than 0.5 and we recorded 0.3 while dissolved oxygen should be more than 5 and ours is between 8.1 and 8.2… So, there is no primary chemical contamination,” Mistry added.
However, to address the issue, Mistry said that VMC plans to take a few steps, including request the Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board to release water from Kadana and Wankbori dams.

“We have stopped the superficial radial valves of frenchwells to draw water from the deeper aspect of the well instead of the surface but this would lead to deficit of water eventually… I have, therefore, instructed that in place of the seven tubewells that are currently working in the city, all the 12 installed tubewells should be pressed into action, she said.
Mistry added, “We have written to Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya seeking release of dam water to wash off the surface water of Mahisagar while we have also told GPCB to check the rivercourse for pollution.”
Mistry further said that the VMC has decided to treat the green phyto pigmentation with chlorination. “We cannot chlorinate the water surface at the river, so we have instructed water in the overhead tanks to be treated with superchlorination… At Rayka and Dodka frenchwells, we are planning high pressure injection chlorination for which an estimate has been invited. I also drank the water from the river at Rayka to reassure the people that it is safe for consumption although we will work to improve its quality,” she added.
