After having three back-to-back hits in 2022, Karthi is opening his account in 2023 towards the tail-end of the year with Japan. With Leo facing a downward trend at the box office, Karthi’s Japan and Karthick Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda Double X are the only big releases for Diwali this year. The promos of Japan have garnered a decent response and Karthi’s look has created intrigue among the audience. The makers have started their promotion tour by meeting the media in Chennai.
At the event, Karthi promised that Japan would be a commercial entertainer with a social message. “For the first time, I asked a director to write a film for me. I usually don’t do that. I wanted to work with Raju Murugan sir for a while. Many asked me to read his book Vaddiyum Mudhalum. Even before reading it, I knew him because after writing the story of Joker, he approached me. I couldn’t do that film, but I loved it when it was released.”
Raju Murugan, who is regarded as a sensible filmmaker, said that Japan is a commercial film. “It has been a learning for me. So, far I have only made films based on what I wrote myself. The first time, I wrote a story with a hero and the commercial aspect of cinema, which is an art in itself. It has been learning for me on that account.”

While interacting with the media, Karthi was asked about his 2014 hit film Madras. Pa Ranjith’s second directorial venture Madras is regarded as one of the most important anti-caste Tamil films. However, Karthi said that he doesn’t see the movie as something to do with caste. “To me, the film was about that wall. The director had made something that was like a foreign movie. The story was the hero in it.”
When asked if he thinks there are no caste issues at all, Karthi said, “I don’t see caste because I grew up in Madras. Even at schools, we only had initials and we asked only for the names. So, I don’t have the concept of caste.” He added that if someone has a different perspective about the film then it is up to them.
Madras, also starring Kalaiyarasan and Catherine Tresa, was about a huge wall in an area in North Chennai. The wall is assumed to be a symbol of power by a dominating community and ends up becoming a divisive force in the area. Karthi played an corporate employee from the area who gets embroiled in a situation when he stands up for his friend Anbu.
