The Hardoi police in Uttar Pradesh have detained four minor boys, aged between 14 and 16, for allegedly stealing cash and electronic items from a private intermediate college last week.

Two of them are students of the same college. The other two boys are friends of one of the college students, said the police.

The police claimed to have recovered Rs 72,500, part of the looted cash, from their possession. “The boys have confessed to their involvement in the incident. They claimed to have thrown electronic items , including a laptop into the river, fearing they could be caught by surveillance,” said the police. Divers have been pressed into service to trace electronic items in the river.

“The search operation is still on. The four boys were produced before Juvenile Justice Board, which sent them to a correction home in Hardoi,” said the police, adding that the family of all four boys are into farming.

According to the police, on October 23, they got information about a robbery at a private college. The police team rushed to the spot and found that miscreants had entered the college campus by scaling the boundary wall. They allegedly broke the lock of an almirah and took away cash and other electronic items.

On the basis of a complaint filed by college authorities, an FIR was lodged against the unidentified accused under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 457 (Lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night ) and 380 (Theft in dwelling house, etc).

The security personnel at the college told the police that two boys studying there on October 22 morning got upset with him and threatened to teach him a lesson.

One of the college students also told the police that he had come across two others planning the theft.

On October 29, the police caught two students and, based on information, detained the other two boys of the village for their alleged involvement, said the station house officer of the police station concerned.
