Three-year-old Rajveer Bharwad was hearing and speech-impaired since birth. A heartening gesture by the Surat Police staff in Rander, however, in collaboration with a nonprofit has helped the family witness what they call nothing less than a “medical miracle”.

Rajveer has now started responding to sounds.  Soon, he will also be undergoing speech therapy. His father Kanha Bharwad, a cattle-herder, hopes her seven-year-old daughter who also can’t hear and speak can also be helped in a similar manner.

It all started in April when Rupal Solanki, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Surat Crime Branch, sent out a message for the ‘She Police’ team, urging them to identify children below five from the economically challenged section who may have speech and hearing impairment.

Dayaben Babubhai, a Lok Rakshak police constable of Rander police station, then carried out a survey in slum areas in the area and got to know about the challenges being faced by Kanha Bharwad who has four children. Rajveer and his seven-year-old sister Komal were born with hearing and speech impairment, Kanha shared with the police staff.
When Kanha had earlier contacted a specialist, he was told that the medical expenses for each child could be as high as Rs 18 lakh. While he could not gather such a huge amount, the family just made sure that both the children were properly taken care of and got all the support they needed.

As Dayaben Babubhai got to know about the details, she informed Rander police inspector A S Sonara who coordinated with DCB DCP Rupal Solanki. The police personnel contacted Sudip Hospital in the city, which is run by Dr. Prayatna Kumar.

Talking to The Indian Express, Rander police inspector A S Sonara said, “We contacted Mumbai-based Shravya NGO that helped us supply an ear-implant chip and on our request, the doctor waived his operation fee. We got Rajveer admitted on October 13 at the city-based Sudip Hospital. After carrying out various tests on him, Dr. Prayatna Kumar carried out the operative procedure on October 15. The boy was kept under observation for a few days and was discharged on Sunday. With the help of various donors, we overcame the medical costs.”

Giving more details, Dr. Prayatna Kumar said, “The cost for an ear implant chip worth Rs. 6.5 lakh and my operation charges — Rs 1.50 lakh — were waived off. The family members and police had to bear the expenses for the hospital stay and medicines. The operation was successful and now the boy has started responding to sounds. In the coming days, he will also undergo speech therapy. The NGO supplies free implant chips only for one ear. And for the other ear, the family has to bear the entire expenses. Within one year, Rajveer will respond well to the voice and sounds. This ear implant is better for those children who are below 5 years.”

“I am very much thankful to the Surat police department and Dr. Prayatna Kumar for their help,” said Kanha.
