AIADMK general secretary and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Edappadi K Palaniswami Friday issued a statement claiming that the law-and-order situation in the DMK-ruled Tamil Nadu is in a shambles and the authorities who act in favour of the government “indulging in anti-people activities” will have to pay the price for it.

Edappadi, or EPS as he is known, claimed that the state police department, which was once compared to Scotland Yard, has now become worse under the MK Stalin government, inviting public wrath. He further alleged it was shameful that the police were trying to make the government’s lies appear to be true in the eyes of the public.

Listing down some of the “law and order issues” in the state, EPS said though Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal claims that the crime rate has gone down, people on social media have been alleging that the police department was not registering 90 per cent of the cases under the DMK rule.

The AIADMK leader said that though the police department claims to have implemented schemes like Ganja 4.0 and other measures to curb sale of ganja, gutka and other banned products, there have been continuous media reports about the free flow of drugs and subsequent arrests. “I had spoken about this in the Assembly as well. Unless the police get to the source point of these drug supplies, no matter how many operations they conduct, they won’t be able to make Tamil Nadu drug-free,” he said.

“The public is waiting to give a befitting lesson to this government. Officials who aid the government, indulging in anti-people activities, will have to pay the price for it,” he added.

Commenting on the recent incident in Tiruchirapalli where police officers were arrested for sexually abusing a minor girl, EPS said that it is the responsibility of the police to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
