Solar panels likely to be installed along Najafgarh drain to generate electricity | Delhi News

Solar panels are likely to be installed along the banks of the Najafgarh drain in Delhi, with officials considering a 6-km stretch in southwest Delhi.
After a site visit on October 5 to assess the grid visibility from six pockets under consideration, officials reported that electricity generation of 5MW (megawatts) can be expected. This update was provided during a status check at a meeting of the High-Level Committee on the rejuvenation of the Yamuna on October 10.
The committee, established following the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), convened to review the progress made in implementing an action plan aimed at ensuring the rejuvenation of the Yamuna in Delhi. This progress review took place in preparation for an NGT hearing on the matter scheduled for Tuesday.
At a prior committee meeting earlier this year, L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena directed the Irrigation and Flood Control Department to explore the potential for generating solar power along the Najafgarh drain by installing pillars with solar panels on its banks. The Chief Secretary also suggested that the Power Department and the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) consider the proposal.
The Najafgarh drain, which spans 57 km, enters Delhi near Dhansa and flows to meet the Yamuna near Wazirabad. The Delhi government is making efforts to clean the drain and ‘restore’ what was once the Sahibi river.

Following a survey of the drain conducted by SECI and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department in August, a 6-km section of the drain from Dhansa to Ghumanhera in Southwest Delhi is being considered for the installation of solar panels.
SECI had previously advised the Irrigation and Flood Control Department to identify a power purchase agency for procuring the generated power, and this matter is currently under consideration by the Power Department.
Although the High-Level Committee was initially chaired by the L-G at the behest of the NGT, a subsequent Supreme Court order stated, “There shall be a stay of the operation of the direction issued on January 9, 2023, by the National Green Tribunal, to the extent that the Lieutenant Governor has been directed to be a member of the Committee and to chair it. The rest of the Committee shall continue to function.”
