The deal between India and the United States on fostering private sector cooperation in semiconductor manufacturing could have three main upsides from New Delhi’s perspective.

The ICC was established to prosecute the most heinous offenses only when a country’s own legal machinery fails to act, as was the case in former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

The Rome Statute now has 123 signatories, including the United Kingdom, Japan, Afghanistan, and Germany. The United States, on the other hand, has maintained that the ICC should not have jurisdiction over residents of nations that are not parties to it. However, the ICC’s jurisdiction is limited to offences occurring after it came into effect on July 1, 2002. The ICC can also practice its jurisdiction over cases referred by the UN Security Council to it.

4. (b)

Indonesian President Joko Widodo inaugurated Southeast Asia’s first high-speed railway. It was set to begin commercial operations, a key project under China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative that will drastically reduce the travel time between two key cities. Hence, statement 1 is correct.

The $7.3 billion project, largely funded by China, was constructed by PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia-China, known as PT KCIC, a joint venture between an Indonesian consortium of four state-owned companies and China Railway International Co. Ltd.

The railway will connect Jakarta and Bandung, the densely populated capital of West Java province, and will reduce travel time between the cities from three hours to roughly 40 minutes. Hence, statement 2 is not correct.

It runs on electrical energy and is expected to reduce carbon emissions. Hence, statement 3 is correct.

Indonesia’s first high-speed train — the fastest in Southeast Asia, at speeds of up to 350 kph (217 mph) — was dubbed “Whoosh” after the Indonesian phrase “Waktu Hemat, Operasi Optimal, Sistem Handal,” which translates as “timesaving, optimal operation, dependable system.”

Therefore, option (b) is the correct answer.

Italy and war-torn Libya resumed commercial flights for the first time in a decade.

According to Libyan and Mitiga airport authorities, flight MT522, operated by the Libyan carrier Medsky Airways, departed Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli for Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport. A return flight was scheduled to land in Tripoli on Saturday afternoon.

The government of Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah in Tripoli lauded the resumed flights, posting photos on social media that showed passengers boarding the flight and officials celebrating.

Italy and other Western nations have barred flights from Libya, which has descended into anarchy after a NATO-backed rebellion ousted and murdered longtime ruler Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.

Therefore, option (a) is the correct answer.
