While the presence of women auto drivers is not uncommon, their numbers remain relatively low. These women defy traditional gender stereotypes, showcasing resilience and determination as they enter a profession historically dominated by men.
On social media, user @prakritea17 shared her first-time experience of travelling in an autorickshaw driven by a woman and posted a picture of the auto driver on X, marking a potentially significant milestone in life as a daily auto passenger. The image quickly gained attention and widespread acclaim, accumulating over 346k views.
Netizens from various backgrounds expressed delight and support for the woman. One user shared, “There is one lady driver at the forum mall in Chennai. Whenever I go with my family, I look out for her. She drives slow and also plays with my daughter.”
For the first time ever, my auto driver in BLR is a woman and it made me so happy for some reason pic.twitter.com/J3JbAZWeYv

Another added, “You must be feeling extra safe!?” and a third remarked, “The best thing is they don’t drive rashly!!!”
A fourth user recalled, “When I used to go to college in Navi Mumbai, there was a separate queue of autos driven by women. The colors of the autos were different, and all of them were extremely sweet and nice. It made me happy too then.”

There are many women driven autos and cabs in Bangalore. I love it when I get one when I book

Others echoed similar sentiments, with one stating, “There are many women-driven autos and cabs in Bangalore. I love it when I get one when I book.”
It was in the 1980s when India’s arguably first woman auto driver Shila Dawre made headlines as she broke gender stereotypes at the age of 18 by driving on Pune roads alongside khaki-clad men autodrivers. Delhi’s presumably first auto driver Sunita Choudhary has devoted the last two decades into this field.
