The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered an interim stay on proceedings in an FIR against Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials who were attacked in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas on January 5 during its search at the residence of Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh in connection with its investigation in the alleged ration scam.

The ED on Wednesday had filed two petitions at the High Court seeking quashing of the FIR lodged at Nazat Police Station in North 24 Parganas district against its officials, claiming that false allegations were made against them. The ED stated that three of its officers were injured and their belongings were snatched during the attack.

Hearing one of the two petitions, the single bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha ordered an interim stay on proceedings in connection with the FIR till March 31. The bench also asked the state government to file an affidavit in this regard and sought a copy of the case diary from the police. The court will hear the matter next on January 22. The police have registered three FIRs in connection with the January 5 incident, including the one against ED officials. However, no one has been arrested till Thursday.

On Thursday, the Calcutta HC  dismissed a PIL filed by West Bengal BJP on the January 5 attack. The Bench said that since the PIL was filed based on media reports and lacked any background research, it was not admissible.
