Education Minister Kuber Dindor on Friday announced a programme to train over two lakh school and college teachers in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on December 3 and 17.
Addressing mediapersons in Gandhinagar, Dindor said that Gujarat will become the first state to provide mass CPR training to its teachers after police personnel. “More than 2 lakh teachers from kindergarten to postgraduation, in all government and aided schools and colleges of the state, will be given CPR training,” he said.
While Dindor will launch the CPR training session at Godhra Civil Hospital, MoS Education Praful Pansheriya will do the same at Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research.
The teachers will be trained by more than 2,500 doctors and medical professionals at 37 medical colleges across the state from 10 am to 6 pm. Those who get trained will be awarded certificates. Dindor claimed that in the last six months, 1,052 people have died due to heart attacks in Gujarat, among which 80 per cent were in the 11-25 age group.
“They had no tension or stress and they were not even obese. With the increasing numbers of such incidents in the last one year, 108 emergency services are getting 173 cardiac calls per day. With more youths dying due to cardiac arrests, there is a fear among them. Through this CPR training, the fear will be reduced,” he added.
“In the last six to seven months, we have seen youngsters dying while dancing garba or playing cricket in the school, sitting in the garden. I urge all teachers to take part in this CPR training and help save lives,” he further said.
When asked about the source of his data, Dindor told The Indian Express, “This is not health department or government data. This is what has been heard in television debates and newspaper reports. What I implied is that we have seen in various cases that many youngsters are dying due to cardiac arrests. So, CPR training is important.”
Later in the day, when mediapersons asked Health Minister Rushikesh Patel about Dindor’s claim, he said he was “not aware” of the numbers cited.
Patel said that the state had addressed the issue of cases of “heart attacks” through press conferences as well as via an expert session organised by the state government and another by Gujarat Red Cross Society chairman Ajay Patel. “The government is alert and ICMR is already studying this issue,” he added.
The Indian Express had reported on November 6 that 52,943 cardiac emergeny calls were made to the 108 number in 2023 till November 4, of which 3.85 per cent calls were made for those in the 11-20 age group and 10.91 per cent calls for 21-30 age group.
