Two senior Congress leaders in Assam joined BJP on Saturday even as the former’s state unit has been working to consolidate the alliance of anti-BJP parties it created in the run-up to next year’s Lok Sabha elections.
Congress Nagaon district president Suresh Bora and Assam Pradesh Youth Congress working president Poritush Roy both formally joined the BJP on Saturday. Several other Congress and Trinamool Congress leaders also joined the BJP on Saturday, including TMC’s state media cell chairperson Dilip Sarma.

Both Suresh Bora and Poritush Roy are said to be close to senior Assam Congress leader Rakibul Hussain.Bora unsuccessfully contested in the least three legislative assembly elections on Congress tickets from Barhampur constituency. In 2021, he had lost by 751 votes to BJP’s Jitu Goswami.
In his resignation letter submitted to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharje, Poritush Roy said it was “practically impossible” to work in the party.
Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah said: “I will not say that we are not hit by the loss of our district chief but we have lost others before and not sat idle.”
