Prime Minister Indira Gandhi warned people against the danger of war looming large on India’s borders. She said “dangerous reports” from across the border aroused the suspicion that some plan was being contemplated against the country. Without naming the neighbouring country, the PM accused its leaders of unleashing false propaganda that India was interfering in their internal affairs.

No truce for PLO
An agreed truce between Syrian-backed rebels and the forces of PLO leader Yasser Arafat in northern Lebanon crumbled even before it began with both sides continuing fierce clashes. The state-controlled service said the ceasefire deadline, which it reported at 4 pm (IST), passed unobserved as rebel guerrillas kept up their onslaught.
Palestine must unite
India called for unity among the Palestinian people and said that any division in their ranks would only give comfort to their enemies. Expressing deep concern at the infighting in the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, the spokesman of the External Affairs Ministry said it was imperative for the Palestinian liberation movement to remain united so that they could devote all their efforts and energies towards the attainment of their cherished goals.
Punjab robbery
Bank robbers struck in Chandigarh and Amritsar, looting over Rs 3.5 lakh from two branches of the State Bank of India and the Punjab and Sindh Bank. Three persons armed with revolvers came in a cream-coloured Ambassador and took over Rs 3 lakh from the Sector 47 branch of the State Bank. This is the biggest robbery in the region after Punjab and Chandigarh were declared disturbed areas.
