BSNL starts offering free 4G SIM upgrades with complimentary data benefits | Technology News

State-owned telecom service provider BSNL recently announced the country-wide rollout of the 4G network and it is now offering free 4G SIM upgrades to its users in select circles. If you are a BSNL user and intend to access a high-speed 4G network, then it is mandatory to upgrade your existing SIM card to a 4G SIM.

According to a post on X by BSNL Andhra Pradesh, those who upgrade to a 4G SIM card from a 2G/3G SIM will also receive 4G GB of complimentary 4G data with three months of validity.

How to identify your BSNL SIM type?

All the BSLN 4G SIM cards will have “BSNL 4G” written on them, which makes it easy to distinguish between a 2G/3G and a 4G SIM. BSNL 4G SIM card also comes in a new shade of red and comes with a nano-SIM size along with adapters to convert it into a micro or a regular-sized SIM card. One can also simply send an SMS ‘SIM’ to 54040 to check their SIM type instantly.

How to upgrade from BSNL 2G/3G SIM to 4G?

BSNL offers free 4G SIM card upgrades at select locations such as customer service centres, franchisee offices, retail stores, or DSA. Do note that upgrading to a 4G SIM card is free, and once upgraded, you should be able to access 4G internet in select locations.

To initiate a SIM upgrade, one has to go through digital KYC, which requires documents like Aadhaar. As announced at the Indian Mobile Congress, BSNL is expected to complete the 4G rollout by June 2024 and the company is also said to start working on a 5G network after that, where, the existing 4G SIM will be capable of handling next-generation wireless network.
