To increase the ridership of Pune metro and achieve its target of 20 per cent of the total ridership of all modes of transport in the city, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) is planning to fill the gap in other modes of transport like e-rickshaw, carts and buses to improve feeder service that would provide last mile connectivity to commuters.
“We expect the ridership of Pune metro should be 20 per cent of the total ridership of all modes in the city. It is a task and will begin with efforts of bringing in behavioural change of using public transport among citizens. The overall ridership of public transport should be 50 per cent of total ridership of all modes,” said Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maha-Metro.
He said the entire phase 1 of Pune metro will be operational from March next year. “The work of metro rail from Ruby Hall clinic to Ramwadi will be completed by December while Shivajinagar to Swargate underground will be by done March,” Hardikar said.
There were joy rides initially and has now coming down with actual ridership on rise, he said,
“The ridership at present is 55,000 which is not satisfactory but is steady. Metro alone cannot improve public transport. The London metro has 12 percent ridership while maximum of 45 percent is by bus.”
The Maximum ridership is possible only after all other corridors are operational and is expected to be two lakh, he said adding, “The improvement of feeder service is must which involves bus, autorickshaw, bicycle and pedestrian facility. If it is in the interest of city, the Pune metro will fill the gap in feeder service facilities.”
The Pune metro has undertaken Detail study of footfall and ridership at each station to understand travel trends, he said the feeder service will be based on data.
