Over a fortnight after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a notice to Dadar’s privately-run Marine aqua zoo for carrying out unauthorised development of temporary structures within its premises, the civic body razed six unauthorised structures built inside the private zoo on Monday.
Details procured from the civic body show that the six structures razed included an unauthorised brick structure as well as sheds built using bamboo, tarpaulin and leaves.
According to senior officials, the private zoo was given 15 days to remove the unauthorised structures in its earlier notice, but it defied BMC instructions.

“A notice was given to remove these constructions within 15 days. But due to non-compliance, today the municipal corporation took action and removed these constructions,” read a notice issued Monday.
Situated near Dadar’s Shivaji Park, the Marine Aqua Zoo has been facing the brunt of police as well as forest department investigations after a complaint was lodged by the civic body following the rescue of a hatchling (baby crocodile) from the nearby adjacent civic run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool.
This is the fourth time that an animal has been rescued from the Dadar pool, fuelling BMC suspicions that the proximity of the privately owned zoo, where exotic reptiles and fish had been kept in standard cages, has led to the appearance of the animals in the pool. In the past six months, the staff has spotted and rescued four animals — a python, snakes and now a hatchling (baby crocodile) — from the pool.
