Two Gujarat-based textile bodies are set to attend a key meeting of members of the committee formed for ‘One nation, one police uniform’ about a year after the idea was mooted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Ahmedabad Textile Industry Research Association (ATIRA) and the Surat-based Man-Made Textile Research Association (MANTRA) are the textile bodies that will be attending the November 10 meeting.

The members aboard the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) panel will be sharing expertise linked to the idea.

The meeting of all the stakeholders has been called at the headquarters of the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) in Delhi.

A letter was sent out on October 26 to the members of the panel formed by the MHA, which includes high-rank police officials of Assam, Ladakh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and other states, besides the directors of ATIRA, South India Textile Research Association (SITRA), Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA), MANTRA, Surat, Troops Comfort Limited, Kanpur, and the Bureau of Indian Standards to remain present at the BPR&D headquarter to discuss standardisation of khaki uniforms for state police and union territory police personnel, and personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces and Central Police Organisations (CPOs).

Festive offer

The PM had mooted the idea at a Chintan Shivir (brainstorming session) of state home ministers and top police officers held in Delhi last year in October when he suggested a common uniform for the police personnel of the entire country.

With police being a state subject, states and union territories were requested to provide details of existing uniforms being used for police personnel of all the wings and also share views and suggestions for considering common patterns of uniform for police personnel.

The committee linked to the idea was subsequently constituted.

Speaking with The Indian Express, MANTRA Director Dr. Pankaj Gandhi said, “It is for the first time the concept of ‘One nation, one police uniform’ has been introduced. In the meeting, we may have to give our opinion on the quality of the fabric to be worn by the policemen across the country. The quality parameters are related to yarn, and colour quality. Presently, we assume that the colour of the uniform will be the same across the country, and mostly, it would be khaki.”

“Apart from this, there would be little change in the quality of fabric, as atmospheric temperature varies from state to state from East to West and from North to South. We will also have to give our opinion on the colours and pigments used in the uniform,” he added.

He further said, “Surat city is also known as a textile hub in the country where different kinds of fabrics are weaved, and sold nationwide, and also exported worldwide. If everything goes well, Surat’s textile businessmen may get an opportunity to manufacture khaki uniforms for policemen across the country.”

MANTRA was set up in the late 1970s when a proposal was floated to set up a full-fledged independent research association for the region, according to its official website.

“The foundation stone for the ATIRA complex was laid by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on 1 November 1950 and was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on completion on April 10, 1954.

Dr Vikram Sarabhai served as its first honorary director,” as per its website.
