Ahead of municipal elections scheduled to be held in November in Punjab, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday told its MLAs that only winning candidates would be given party tickets after a through survey on their winnability.

Chairing the meeting of party organisation, national head of the AAP’s party organisation and Rajya Sabha member Sandeep Pathak is learnt to have told all those present that “the organisation was supreme” and “only those
who would fare well in the surveys will be given a ticket. No push from any quarter would make anyone eligible for the party ticket,” a source told The Indian Express.

Sources said that during his address, Pathak said that district-level committees would be formed, headed by a minister. The committee would also have MLAs, district presidents, block presidents and neutral observers.

Thorough surveys would be conducted on the contenders for the tickets. Only those who pass these surveys would be given the tickets.

“It was a message that pulling strings or lobbying will not work. The tickets would be given on merit as the party does not want to take any chances. We were told that we have to work hard, build up the party. We were told that not individuals but organisation is supreme,” a source said.
