On Wednesday, Sanghamitra Kumbhare (22) and her relative Rosa Ramteke (36) were arrested for allegedly murdering the five by administering Thallium over a period of one month.

According to police, after Sanghamitra’s failed suicide attempt by cutting her veins, the two women came together and decided to kill the others.

Police said Sanghamitra and Rosa were arrested for killing Sanghamitra’s husband Roshan, Roshan’s parents Shankar and Vijaya, his sister Komal and Vijaya’s sister Varsha Urade by regularly mixing a heavy metal poison in their food and water. Ramtake is Vijaya’s sister-in-law.

The incident took place between mid-September and October 15 at Mahagaon village in Gadchiroli.

The investigators, who are trying to identify Rosa’s 41-year-old husband’s role in the crime, said that they have tried to mislead them multiple times. In one such instance, an officer said that as soon after they started probing the mysterious deaths, Rosa’s husband cut off his hair by claiming that they are also victims of intake of some poisonous substance.

“Initially an alarm was raised after Komal lost her life on October 8. So we started probing and we first visited the spot on October 11 and three days later we found that Rosa’s husband had cut off his hair. When we inquired, he claimed that he also has symptoms,” said an officer.

“Later we understood that Sanghamitra was taking constant updates from the doctors and trying to understand the symptoms of the poison. As hair loss was also one of them, she then passed on the information to Rosa following which she insisted on her husband to shave his head,” the officer added.

The Gadchiroli police are trying to ascertain the location and the person from whom the heavy metal poison was procured.

An investigator said, “The two women have not been cooperating with us as during inquiry. They point in one direction and when we move towards that and try to verify them, they change their statements. Initially both of them had said that poison was bought by Rosa but now they claim that it was Sanghamitra who got them from Telangana. So we are finding it difficult to probe.”

On Thursday, Sanghamitra was taken to the hospital for a check up after she complained of illness. She is receiving treatment, said police.

The investigators suspect that the 22-year-old woman only held grudge against Roshan, Shankar and Vijaya, for allegedly harassing her as she believed that it was due to them her father had died by suicide in Akola in April.

“We suspect that she only wanted to kill the three but Rosa, who had an ulterior motive of taking over the ancestral property, wanted to kill others too. Apart from Roshan, Shankar and Vijaya, they administered poison in four other family members through food out of which Urate and Komal died,” said an investigator.

Two other family members and their driver, who were also victims to the slow poisoning, are currently admitted in hospital.
