Amid calls by BJP workers for a holiday on January 22 in view of the Ram temple consecration in Ayodhya, the Karnataka government has clarified it will be a working day for schools, even as private school managements plan to live-stream the ceremony for students.
“We are not announcing a holiday for schools on January 22. It will be a working day. If there is any law and order situation in (Bengaluru) city or the state, respective deputy commissioners will take a call on announcing holiday,” an education department official said on Thursday.
The Associated Managements of Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) has issued a directive to all its member schools to not announce a holiday for students and to live-stream the consecration ceremony instead.
D Shashikumar, general secretary of KAMS, said in the directive, “The Ram Mandir consecration ceremony on January 22 at Ayodhya has drawn the attention of the entire country. In this background, it is recommended that all the members of the association live-stream the event for one and a half hours in their respective schools.”
“The respective educational institutions should conduct this programme in a way that it keeps politics out and instead showcases the importance of Ram Janmabhoomi in the historical, religious and cultural context. It is our opinion that announcing a holiday is not a step in the right direction and students will miss the experience of watching the historic moment together,” he added.
The Bengaluru unit of Sri Rama Sene, meanwhile, has written to Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot requesting him to direct the state government to announce a holiday on January 22 for schools and colleges. The governments of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Chhattisgarh and Haryana have announced a school holiday on the day.
