Three people, including two women, were killed after the two-wheeler on which all three were travelling hit a divider and collided with a dumper on Parel Bridge in Mumbai early Tuesday, police said.
According to police, the accident took place at around 6.15 am and the three victims — Tanish Patange (24), Renuka Tamrakar (25) and Nicole Dias (25) — who suffered grievous head injuries, died during treatment at KEM Hospital.
According to police, Patange is a resident of Antop Hill while Tamrakar is a Mahim resident and Dias of Charni Road. Police said Patange, who was riding the two-wheeler without helmet, lost control of the two-wheeler and hit the divider.
“The two-wheeler collided with the divider on the north-bound road and was thrown off to the opposite side where it was hit by the dumper. The two-wheeler was then thrown back on the south-bound road,” said an officer.
Passersby then informed the police control room, following which the patrolling vehicle of Bhoiwada police station rushed to the spot and took the injured to hospital.
All the three sustained severe head injuries and were declared dead during treatment, said police. Police have registered a case of accidental death report and are probing the matter.
Senior police inspector Subhash Borate of Bhoiwada police station said, “We have not registered a case yet and are awaiting the postmortem report.”
Police are also trying to ascertain the time and location where the trio met and how they knew each other.
“Tamrakar and Dias were in college together,” said Godrey D’souza, a family friend of Dias, adding, “We are unaware of how the two girls got introduced to Patange.”
An officer said, “The mobile phones of all the three victims got damaged in the accident due to which we were not able to get any details.”
Sanjay Saharkar, a relative of Patange, said, “He wanted to step out Monday night but his father and brother stopped him. By midnight, when the family was fast asleep, he (Patange) went out without informing anyone.”
Dias and Tamrakar had told their parents that they were going to meet each other.
The family members further added that they were informed about the incident at around 7am on Tuesday.
D’souza said, “Police initially came to my house and informed that Dias met with an accident. I took police to their house, after which we all went to the police station.”
Patange worked in a call centre in Chandigarh and had come to Mumbai to meet his family.
“He is survived by his father, an elder sister and a younger brother. He lost his mother five months ago… he was in Mumbai on vacation and was to go back to Chandigarh on Wednesday. His tickets were also booked,” said Saharkar.
Police said that Tamrakar was working in a call centre at Andheri in Mumbai and Dias, a graduate, was looking for a job.
Renuka’s friends who gathered at the hospital said they were unaware of her friendship with Patange.
