The Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi president Prakash Ambedkar on Saturday said the spat between India and Maldives over tourism will benefit China.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Ambedkar said, “Gochhu (blockheaded) Modi, who has placed himself above the foreign policy and interest of a nation fell right into the trap laid by China.” “Without realising the trap of the action and the dire consequences of the reaction, Modi directed his stooges to unleash a boycott campaign against Maldives. He led the whole country into a trap laid by our neighbour China.”

While cautioning of serious long term ramifications, Ambedkar said, “The boycott and hate campaign has given the present Maldives government more reasons to further inch towards China. China will now use Maldives Island to built their own ‘Diego Garcia’ in the Indian Ocean.”

Speaking to the Indian Express, Ambedkar said, “Yes, I call PM ‘Gochhu’ for his shortsightedness. The same issue could have been handled carefully. After all the derogatory term used by Maldives ministers was not the official position of the entire government, which they eventually clarified.”

When asked how he could use such a term for the PM, Ambedkar said, “I not using it to demean anybody personally. It is just a word to disapprove the manner in which the Maldives issue was tackled.”

Festive offer

“The India-Maldives spat was not good as Maldives will start looking to China for tourism. The nexus between Maldives and China strategically does not auger well for India in terms of foreign policies. China will benefit most from differences between India and Maldives.”

By stretching the issue far, India has allowed Maldives to get closer and depend upon China. Thus, Indian interest has been impacted, he argued.

It must be mentioned here that Indians constitute a sizeable portion of tourists in Maldives.

Indian tourists started withdrawing their plans following the derogatory remark made by Maldives ministers against PM Modi.

Taking to X, the three suspended Maldivian ministers recently called the Indian PM a “Clown” and a puppet of Israel in response to his posts about Lakshadweep islands.

The Maldives foreign ministry distanced itself from the remarks and three ministers were suspended. But the issue boiled into a major controversy, resulting in Indian tourists canceling their holiday plans in Maldives.
