In a joint operation conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force and Noida Police, 25 people were arrested Thursday for allegedly running a fake call center and duping US nationals.
The accused, who ran a fake call center in D-block, Sector 59, Noida, used to pose as tech support executives, get access to personal devices of US nationals through different online tools, and mislead them by saying that their system had been hacked and compromised, police said.
The police have recovered 34 mobile phones, 4 laptops, 5 internet routers, 4 vehicles, 22 computers, 2 registers and 24 pages of document consisting the contact numbers of the targets and their SOP.
“First, through the TFN portal, the accused used to get the call diverted to their call center using an eyebeam software. Posing as a company executive, the accused would assure all help to the caller. In this process, the accused used to tell the caller that his/her system has been compromised and then, on the pretext of fixing the problem, the accused would convince their targets to download a screen-mirror software like AnyDesk. Through this app, they used to get remote access to the caller’s system. After this they took payments in the form of gift cards available on leading online brands like Amex, Amazon, Google Play, GameStop, Sephora, Nordstormd etc. worth 100 to 500 dollars,” said an official.
Apart from the 25 arrested accused, some more suspects are involved in the scam and they are absconding, police said, adding that they are calculating the actual amount of the fraud by this gang.
The accused have been identified as Jayant, Manik, Sabir, Shiva, Mohit, Adil, Divyam, Ritik, Saksham, Himanshu, Rohit, Ankur, Kailash, Firoz and others. They are residents of Agra, Delhi, Ghaziabad, Amroha, Baghpat, Jhajjar and Meerut.
An FIR under IPC sections 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467, 468 and 471— all three related to forgery — as well as provisions of the Information Technology Act has been registered in sector-58 police station in Noida.
In November 2023, a joint team of the STF and local police busted two such scams in Noida and Greater Noida, where 41 people were arrested for allegedly duping foreign nationals.
