In a first but important step bringing relief to the families of eight former Indian Navy personnel on the death row in Qatar, the appellate court has commuted their death sentence. The commutation of the death sentence is the first legal win for New Delhi, almost a year-and-half after the detention and arrest of the former Indian Navy personnel in Qatar.
Reacting to the news, their families and colleagues were relieved, but cautious, saying the verdict is not yet a vindication or success. “The Emir’s pardon can only be applied after the highest court rules on the judgement. This will likely take another three months before a (plea for) pardon can be filed,” a relative of one of the eight men told The Indian Express.
