Four councillors of the BJP were suspended for 15 days by Mayor Shelly Oberoi in view of their “continuous indiscipline” at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) monthly House assembly held Thursday. Meanwhile, 18 agendas were passed by the AAP-led MCD amidst the uproar.

Ruckus erupted in the MCD house after Oberoi asked BJP’s Raja Iqbal Singh, the leader of the Opposition, to read the agenda. However, Singh launched into a speech, questioning the AAP on spurious medicines being allegedly distributed at government hospitals and MCD’s alleged incompliance towards Supreme Court’s recent order to de-seal shopping complexes within 100 hours.

Delhi government minister Saurabh Bhardwaj, who has allowed distribution of fake medicines, should be arrested soon…Despite the order of the Supreme Court, the local shopping complexes are not being desealed,” Singh said during his speech even as the mayor asked him to take a seat and not disturb the proceedings of the House. At this, several BJP councillors climbed on tables and raised slogans such as “Dawai Chor” (medicine thief). A number of these councillors had carried personal microphones to the house. The AAP councillors also hit back with slogans of their own.

Not more than 10 minutes into the meeting, agendas were passed and the House was adjourned. Oberoi announced that four BJP councillors were suspended for 15 days for “creating ruckus” in the House. These included Singh, Yogendra Verma, Gajendra Singh and Ravi Negi.

“Raja Iqbal started creating ruckus even before the meeting started. He instigates his councilors to create ruckus. Sometimes they bring private mics and sometimes, they stand on the tables…issues are raised which have nothing to do with MCD,” Mayor Oberoi later said while addressing a press conference.

Festive offer

She said the House was not allowed to function peacefully even for a single day throughout the year.

“Amidst the uproar, the agenda has to be passed under compulsion. Even while passing the agenda, BJP councilors snatch the copies of the agenda from our hands, which is a very shameful act,” AAP’s Leader of the House, Mukesh Goel, said. Around 18 agendas were passed, four were postponed and two were referred back in the House.

Responding to Oberoi’s allegations, Singh said, “the Mayor has accused the Opposition of not allowing the House meeting to continue, which is absolutely wrong. AAP has no constructive role in the House meeting. Their only intention is to get the agenda passed by accusing the Opposition.” Singh claimed that the Mayor had no answer to his questions which is why he was suspended from the House.

“The BJP is not allowing the House to function as part of a conspiracy to prevent the work of the people of Delhi from happening… councilors did not allow discussion on the issue of sealing, they are not serious about the problems of citizens,” Goel responded.
