In a case of road rage in West Delhi’s Tagore Garden, a 56-year-old taxi driver died after he was allegedly beaten up by two men who objected to him overtaking their car. The duo, who also assaulted the man’s son and relative, have been arrested.
According to police, the incident took place on Sunday around 5.30 pm near Tagore Garden Metro station. Police received a call that a man, Ravinder Singh, had been assaulted and was declared dead on arrival when taken to the hospital.
“The people accompanying him were his son and a relative, but they could not note down the number plate of the offending vehicle. The only clue they could provide was that it was a white Creta,” said police.
Subsequently, a case was lodged and efforts were initiated to track down the car.
“Multiple police teams were deployed and several CCTVs were checked before the vehicle was finally tracked… Eventually, two accused men who were inside the Creta were arrested from their home in Paschim Vihar,” said an officer.
The accused, Jatin and Pawan Samariya, cousins aged 21, are in the business of scrap dealing. Police said they assaulted Singh multiple times on the chest as well as his son Taranjot, who studies in Class X.
Officers said Singh was on his way back after getting his car repaired when the Creta tried to overtake his WagonR.
“Eventually, the Creta drivers got out. For 15 minutes, there was a heated argument between the occupants of both cars. Suddenly, the accused started beating up Singh, his son and relative,” said another officer.
Never picked a fight with anyone: Family
Police said Singh was a resident of Santgarh in Tilak Nagar.
His cousin SP Singh told The Indian Express, “Ravinder had been driving a private taxi for the last several years and was the sole breadwinner of the family… Ravinder started vomiting while on his way to the hospital and was declared dead on arrival there. He never initiated a fight with anyone and was always a calm person… In this case too, it was the accused who started the fight as they objected to him overtaking them. Taranjot told me his father tried to reason with the men, but they didn’t listen and kept beating up Ravinder even as bystanders watched…”
He said Taranjot too sustained injuries on his lips and received first-aid at the hospital.
