The Congress on Tuesday slammed Chief Minister Eknath Shinde saying he fooled Marathas and was clueless on how to extend reservation to the community. Shinde in the legislative assembly announced that a special session will be held in February on giving reservation to Marathas.
“Eknath Shinde gave no timeline about Maratha reservation. He did not elaborate on the state government’s stand on crossing the 50% quota limit while giving reservation to Marathas. The model code of conduct for the general election will be applicable in February and March. How can the state government call a special session then? It is clear that the state government will stretch the matter,” said former chief minister and Congress leader Ashok Chavan. He added that Eknath Shinde fooled Marathas and that this government was clueless on how the matter should be taken forward.
Chavan was the head of the cabinet sub-committee on Maratha reservation in the previous government.
Chavan pointed out that the Supreme Court had highlighted the 50% reservation limit in the Indra Sawhney case and 102nd constitutional amendment while scrapping the Maratha reservation.
“The Chief Minister did not even mention these issues and steps the state government is going to take to tackle them. The state needs the Centre’s help to cross the 50% limit. But nobody is talking about it,” said Chavan, pointing out that the present government was looking for a way out by criticising the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar criticised the state government saying Shinde reiterated the old schemes. “The government only spoke about old schemes without making any definite statement about the ongoing Maratha and OBC issue. The government has failed to give any specific timeframe and is only keeping the community hopeful,” he said.
