A cell phone with an active SIM card has been found in the possession of Deepak Ranga, lodged in Chandigarh’s Model Burail Jail in connection with the rocket-propelled grenade attack on the Punjab police’s intelligence headquarters in May 2022, which was found to have been carried out at the behest of Pakistan’s ISI.

Sources said the cell phone was seized when it was being used by Deepak Ranga (24) in the washroom attached to barrack number 9 on Sunday night.

A police officer said, “We have lodged an FIR against Deepak Ranga under the Prisons (Punjab Amendment) Act for possessing the mobile. He is being questioned on how he procured the mobile while inside the jail. Ranga has been lodged in Model Burail Jail for the last six months.”

A close associate of gangster Harvinder Singh Rinda, Ranga was arrested by the National Investigation Agency from Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur on January 25. The Chandigarh police secured Ranga’s custody in connection with three killings including a double-murder reported in 2019. He was earlier part of Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang.

A resident of Surakhpur village in Haryana’s Jhajjar district, Ranga had allegedly received Rs 10-15 lakh from his Pakistan-based handlers for executing the rocket-propelled grenade attack in Mohali.
