A day after the BJP secured a resounding victory in the Assembly elections in three states, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said the “poll results ended egos” and the parties willing to fight the BJP would have to be more disciplined.

Yadav, who was in Varanasi, acknowledged that the fight would be tougher for their party in Uttar Pradesh and it would have to take some big decisions. He, however, expressed hope that some new way will be found and results will be different in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Without naming the Congress, SP’s INDIA bloc partner, Akhilesh said talks would start from the beginning and that parties in an alliance should support their stronger partners from a region.

“We are not disappointed (with the results). This is part of politics and democracy,” he added.

The results only showed that the SP and those who want to fight a big party like BJP would have to prepare a lot, he said. “There are many people who are disappointed and have lost hope. There is a long fight ahead, the former Chief Minister said.

Festive offer

“We will have to fight with discipline and strategy to make a comeback with the majority. Only then we can hope that the results will be different in the coming times,” he told mediapersons.

While it was important to save the Constitution and democracy, it was also imperative to understand that the struggle of Samajwadis was bigger in Uttar Pradesh as they would have to make some big decisions, he said.

Whether the Opposition parties are going to adopt “soft Hindutva” in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, Akhilesh said, “What is hard and soft? A Hindu is a Hindu and the Sanatan Dharma is Sanatan Dharma?”

The main objective of having a coalition was to fight the BJP, he further said.

On his demand for a caste-based census and the ruling BJP alleging that the Opposition is trying to create a divide in the name of caste, the SP chief said, “All those who fail to understand poverty should read the preface to the Mandal Commission report. The report talks about caste-based poverty.”

Those speaking against a caste-based census are against Dalits, minorities, and scheduled tribes, he alleged.
