The BJP has started preparations for a rally to be addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata on November 29 after the Calcutta High Court gave the nod to the party to hold the public meeting.
On Sunday, party leaders and workers performed a ‘khuti puja’, a customary ritual before putting up a makeshift stage for the meeting. Then they also listened to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Man Ki Baat’ programme.
A division bench of the Calcutta High Court recently upheld a single-bench order permitting the public meeting of the BJP in the Esplanade area.
The division bench, presided over by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam, dismissed an appeal by the West Bengal government challenging the November 20 order of the single bench. The BJP had moved the court after the Kolkata Police denied them permission to hold the programme. For the rally, the party intends to mobilise 1 lakh people who it claims were deprived of the Centre’s schemes due to alleged corruption of the TMC government.
BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar, who along with party MLA Agnimitra Paul and others was present on Sunday, said, “We want to bring 1 lakh people here to protest against the corruption of Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government. We have been receiving a massive response from the people. We are eagerly waiting for Amit Shah ji to come here and address the gathering.”
Shah addressed a rally at the same venue in 2014 and the the BJP had to move the Calcutta High Court to get permission for it that time too.
Sources in the party said about 10 boxes will be kept at the venue where the people will submit details of their being deprived of the Central schemes.
Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari has extended his support to the party. Adhikari, in a video message, asked people and party workers, who have faced “atrocities” and “deprivation”, to come forward and register their protest in a democratic and peaceful manner. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar also released a message addressed to people. According to party insiders, the rally is being organised to showcase the party’s strength ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
