At the end of a long, heated debate on Punjab in Parliament during which the opposition and the treasury benches accused each other of insincerity in finding a solution, the Home Minister, P C Sethi, offered to resume tripartite talks. Queen’s India Visit
The capital is all set to receive the British queen, with the entire VIP area in New Delhi spruced up for the occasion. The route from Palam to Rashtrapati Bhavan was being gaily decorated with welcome arches at several points. The Union Jack was flying resplendently alongside the Indian tricolour. Baddawi Camp Falls
The last stronghold of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat fell to Syrian-backed rebels after savage fighting while in eastern Lebanon Israeli planes made a revenge raid against pro-Iranian Muslim militants. The Israeli attack hit the Lebanese base of the Shia “Islamic Amal” movement, which was blamed for the recent truck-bomb attacks on Israeli US and French troops in Lebanon. Eyewitnesses reported that Arafat’s last stronghold in the Baddawi refugee camp fell.
India Favours Cyprus
India has taken an unequivocal stand in favour of Cyprus and deplored the unilateral declaration of independence by the Turkish Cypriot in its northern territory. Cyprus President Spyros Kyprianou talked to Mrs Indira Gandhi soon after the Turkish-held northern territory of Cyprus declared itself independent.
