This year’s Diwali celebrations by the Pawar family are being watched closely than ever before. Ajit Pawar, who recently dumped his uncle and NCP founder Sharad Pawar and walked away with half of the party to the ruling dispensation, had given a miss to the morning get-together organised at the Gonvindbaug residence of senior Pawar.
Ajit Pawar’s absence also led to a speculation that he is likely to give a miss to the family event this year given the current political scenario.
However, by late evening, things changed as family photos shared by the Pawar family showed Ajit standing among the 40-odd members of the family dressed up for the festive occasion of Padva.
On Wednesday morning, on the day of Bhaubeej which is an occasion for brothers and sisters to show love for each other, Supriya Sule, Member of Parliament from Baramati, travelled to cousin Ajit’s residence in Katewadi to participate in the function with half a dozen ladies of the family.
She shared pictures of her performing the ritual of ovalani while giving an affectionate look to her politically estranged cousin who was seated wearing a fur cap.
In the Facebook post, she also thanked Ajit’s wife Sunetra for gifting her the bright yellow saari she wore for the occasion. Reports said that senior Pawar also dashed to Ajit’s residence soon after.
None of the family members, however, made any political comment about the meet up which is bound to cause some unease among the ruling dispensation and confusion among the NCP workers who have sworn allegiance to the uncle and the cousin’s camps.
Soon after the event, Ajit rushed to Mumbai to watch the ICC World Cup semi-final between India and New Zealand being played at the Wankhede Stadium.
Ajit’s absence from the family events in the first two days of Diwali had invited considerable media attention and the Pawar family had tried to brush it aside citing that the Deputy Chief Minister had recently suffered from dengue and was recuperating.

Others thought that this explanation held no water as Ajit had travelled to Delhi to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this week.
“For the last 20-25 days, he had not attended any event,” Sule had said on Tuesday afternoon.
“Ranjit Pawar, the other brothers and family members have all gathered. We have to accept this with a large heart. We should live in reality. We should all remember that the glass is never half empty,” Sule had said.
