Admitting that the zebra crossings on many roads across the city are in a bad condition and cause inconvenience to pedestrians, the Pune Municipal Corporation has decided to repaint the zebra crossings at junctions on the city roads.
“The zebra crossings at junctions on city roads are in a poor condition. They had faded because of the monsoon but the civic administration could not take up the work then. However, the PMC has now decided to give priority to repainting zebra crossings as it is much needed for pedestrians to cross the road safely. It will begin immediately after Diwali,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Vikas Dhakane.
The PMC will first repair the road stretches including those at junctions and ensure a plane surface, he said, adding,
“The repainting of the zebra crossings will be done using thermoplastic paint to ensure it lasts for long.”
The civic administration will also paint the lane-separating markers on roads and mark dedicated parking spaces alongside the roads as they help in disciplining traffic, Dhakane said.
The Indian Express, in a recent three-part series, highlighted the concerns about the safety of pedestrians crossing roads at the main junctions in the city. The Indian Express team had monitored the crossings on Pune-Solapur Road, Sinhagad Road, Satara Road, Ganeshkhind Road, Karve Road and Nagar Road, considering the heavy traffic flow.
Zebra crossings have faded at most of the junctions, leaving no safe passage for pedestrians to cross the roads.
Pedestrians, mainly children and senior citizens, were found struggling to cross the roads despite waiting for 5-10 minutes at the busy junctions.
The pedestrian crossing time of 15 seconds was found to be inadequate as people demanded more time at some places to cross the road.

The PMC, along with the traffic police, is working on the implementation of the adaptive traffic management system (ATMS) for the smooth flow of traffic.
“The PMC manages the traffic signals infrastructure and operates it as per the instructions of the traffic police. We are working to ease the traffic situation in the city through the ATMS, in which the safety of pedestrians has also been taken into account,” an official said.
Vehicles jumping traffic signals is also a serious issue despite police penalising the violators through its CCTV monitoring.
