The JJ hospital in Mumbai has established a specialized unit dedicated to providing care for those affected by air pollution, particularly those experiencing respiratory distress.
The hospital’s initiative follows a state directive to government-run hospitals to implement precautionary measures to treat such patients in view of the rising air pollution in Diwali season.
The JJ hospital has created a dedicated treatment room within the outpatient department of the department of medicine, ensuring accessibility to treatment for affected individuals.
Operating from 8 am to 12.30 pm, the facility aims to cater to patients during these hours, with the added provision of medical attention available at the hospital’s accident department throughout the day.
Recognizing the hospital’s critical role, it has been selected as one of the 17 “sentinel surveillance” sites for acute respiratory illnesses (ARI) in Maharashtra.
Sentinel surveillance involves the monitoring of specific disease occurrences through a voluntary network of doctors, laboratories, and public health departments. Its purpose is to assess the stability or change in the health levels of the population.
The newly established independent respiratory disorders cell, jointly managed by the Department of Medicine and Chest-Tuberculosis, will play a pivotal role in addressing the increasing number of respiratory disorder cases.
A dedicated patient room has been reserved within the hospital to ensure patients have access to essential nebulization and other vital medical facilities.

Pallavi Sapale, dean of the hospital, underscored the importance of a continuous and transparent reporting system to track the daily influx of patients in the dedicated room.
This data will be regularly shared with senior hospital officials to monitor the evolving situation.
Medical Education Minister-Hasan Mushrif also emphasized on maintaining an adequate supply of medicines like Nebulizers to meet the needs of patients with respiratory disorders.
