A pair of heritage office cane chairs from Chandigarh designed by Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret was auctioned off for a whopping Rs 4.99 lakh in France on November 4.

Member of Heritage Protection Cell Ajay Jagga has written to Union Minister for External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar to look into the matter and issue directions to save the country’s heritage items.

“The regular auction of Indian Heritage by foreign auction houses, without any resistance/concern from our missions (embassies) despite the fact that the Ministry of Home Affairs has already banned its export by a written order in 2011. This is clearly in violation of the Constitutional mandate. But still, the heritage of India is being auctioned every month in foreign countries,” he mentioned.

He also specified that the French officials are ready “to help and cooperate”, but they have asked India to first launch an investigation and then seek France’s output.

“The NITI Aayog in a recent report has also mentioned regarding heritage management and Article 253 of the Constitution that enables Parliament to legislate for the implementation of any treaty, agreement or convention with any other country or countries, or any decision, made at any international conference, association or other body. Any such legislation can be enacted even if the subject matter of the legislation is an item in the State List of the Constitution of India,” he said in the letter.

He called upon the central government to be aware of the international conventions that are relevant to the protection and conservation of art and cultural heritage and to which India is a signatory.
