A judge in Karnataka has filed a complaint against duty doctors of two government hospitals in Mysuru for denying treatment to a differently-abled tribal girl who died on October 31, officials said.
The victim Sonia, 12, who hailed from Bommadu village in Kodagu district, was first taken to a local hospital in Gonikoppal following severe breathing ailment and later had to be shifted to Mysuru city, 88 kilometres away, on October 26, stated Shilpa AG, First Class Additional Senior Civil Judge and Chief Judicial Magistrate in Mysuru, in the complaint filed on October 27.
According to the First Information Report filed by the Devaraja police in Mysuru, the girl was kept waiting by the doctors of Cheluvamba hospital, a government maternity and children hospital, and the nearby KR Hospital in the city for more than six hours.
The duty doctor at Cheluvamba hospital, where the patient was first rushed to, refused to admit the girl for want of a bed, and the parents, Sangeeta and Afzal, rushed their daughter to a private hospital which is 2 kilometres away, the judge said in the complaint.
As the family couldn’t afford to pay the daily rent of Rs 25,000, the couple shifted her to KR Hospital, another government hospital next to Cheluvamba hospital, said the judge, adding that the hospital also refused to admit the patient.
Following the prolonged delay in admission, the patient’s mother sought the help of judge Shilpa, who was known to Sangeeta.
“Shilpa personally called the District Health Officer and contacted Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Nayaz Pasha at KR Hospital and informed him about the patient. It was about 10pm. The duty doctor, Dr Chaitra, was annoyed that her sleep was disturbed. Shilpa then contacted Vasanth, a court police constable, who reached the hospital to take stock of the matter,” said a police officer.
According to the FIR, Dr Chaitra got annoyed when Vasanth knocked at the door to pass Shilpa’s message to request to admit the patient.

“However, the doctor, after discussion with PG student Dr Syed for an hour, refused to admit the child and asked the parents to take the child to Cheluvamba hospital. Sonia was admitted for treatment in Cheluvamba hospital following the intervention of the RMO around 12.30 am. But Sonia died on October 31,” said the police officer.
The police have registered a case against the duty doctor of Cheluvamba and Dr Chaitra and others of KR Hospital under Sections 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
Judge Shilpa also has filed a complaint with the Lokayukta police.
