Still remembered for his performance as the dyslexic student in Taare Zameen Par, Darsheel Safary is back with Hukus Bukus. The film in the young actor’s words is about ‘humanity’. As seen in the trailer, Darsheel plays an ardent Sachin Tendulkar fan, who finds himself against his religious father in a sensitive environment in Kashmir. However, the actor shared that the film doesn’t take a religious stance but rather promotes oneness.

“We often forget the power of humanity while talking about faiths and beliefs. Our film tries to show how everyone is human and there is a reason behind every action. My character Arjun is like a beam of innocence, who is filled with love and passion. Also, we have cricket as our prime subject, something which people follow more closely than even religion in our country. On one side my character is fanatic about Sachin Tendulkar, on the other hand, his father is a religious pandit. How their beliefs are different but they come together in a moment of tragedy, is what people will see,” Darsheel told indianexpress.com. He also shared that eventhough Kashmir is passionate about cricket, the fact remains untouched in films.

Released last year, The Kashmir Files revolved around Kashmiri Pandits. While The Kashmir Files evoked a lot of emotions from many, a section of the audience also called it a propagandist movie. When asked if he was worried about Hukus Bukus receiving a negative response, Darsheel Safary said, “For me, I didn’t want to be associated with any kind of propaganda. That would mean you are taking sides, and as an actor, I believe in taking only the audience’s side. When I was narrated the script, I had the biggest smile on my face. The story is very simple and sweet and once you watch it, you will be able to understand it.”

Darsheel Safary has worked in projects like Kutch Express, Aadha Ishq, and Capital A Small A, among others. However, he is still remembered as the ‘Taare Zameen Par boy’. Ask him about that and he smiled to say, “Honestly, I am inspired and flattered. Not everyone gets that kind of love for their first film. Everyone is hungry for more love and that pushes me to keep picking up projects that would help people be inspired. As actors, we have the power to evoke emotions in others. I think even after my 100th film, I will feel lucky that I am remembered as the Taare Zameen Par boy. I want to be able to pull audiences back to the theatre along with their family.”

Given that Darsheel started his career at the young age of 10, we wondered when he fell in love with the craft. “I think it was during one of my plays. There was a scene where my co-actor had to slap me. I had a lot of inhibitions so we decided to cheat that shot. But during the performance, I don’t know why but he decided to go with a real slap. And the live reaction that I got made me realise how I had established a connection with my audience. And that made me just fall in love with acting. This was in 2013-14 when I had just started theatre and then I started working harder on myself to pursue this profession lifelong.”

Festive offer
