The idea that chocolate, cheese, and red wine can help people live longer has garnered attention due to various studies and the presence of certain beneficial compounds in these foods. It has been a topic of both fascination and debate. While there are some studies suggesting the health benefits of these indulgences, medical experts emphasise a need for moderation and a balanced approach. Here’s why.
Chocolate
Chocolate, specifically dark chocolate, contains flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties and may contribute to heart health. According to Shruti Bhardwaj, consultant clinical dietician, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Ahmedabad, moderate chocolate consumption is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. Choose high-quality dark chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 70 per cent for the best health outcomes, mentioned nutritionist Dr Rohini Patil.

Cheese
Cheese is a rich source of calcium and protein, and some studies have indicated that it might be linked to a lower risk of certain health issues. According to Dr Rohini, the link between cheese and longevity isn’t as straightforward. “Cheese is a dairy product and a source of calcium and protein, which are essential for bone health and muscle maintenance.”
However, cheese is also high in saturated fats, which can be detrimental to heart health when consumed in excess. “The impact of cheese on longevity may vary depending on individual factors and overall dietary habits,” added Bhardwaj.
Dr Rohini added that individuals who are lactose intolerant must keep in mind that cheese contains lactose, which may hamper their health causing reactions. “However, there are some cheese options available, particularly lactose-free cheese.”
Red wine
The association between red wine and longevity is often linked to the French Paradox, described Dr Rohini. “This term describes the seemingly lower rates of heart disease in France despite a diet rich in saturated fats. Some researchers believe that the consumption of red wine, particularly due to its high levels of resveratrol (an antioxidant), might offer protective benefits to the heart.”
While the amount of resveratrol in a typical glass of wine is minimal, according to Dr Rohini, excessive alcohol consumption, even red wine, can lead to a host of health issues, including liver problems and an increased risk of certain cancers.
Bhardwaj added that it’s essential to drink red wine in moderation and consider other sources of resveratrol, like grapes.
