“Deeply saddened by the cold-blooded killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, OC Moreh Police this morning. His dedication to serve and protect the people will always be remembered. The perpetrators will be brought to justice,” said Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Moreh, located at Manipur’s border with Myanmar, is a town with a mixed population, but the largest population is of the Kuki-Zomi community. Once violence began spreading across the state on May 3, the town’s 3,000-odd Meitei community left their homes, some even seeking shelter across the border in Myanmar. The town continues to be without its Meitei residents. At the same time, the town’s Kuki-Zomi population has been pushing back against the presence of Manipur police personnel there, alleging bias against their community in the ongoing conflict.
This incident also comes after a fairly long period of relative calm. The last major episode of unrest in the state was at the end of September when there were fierce and widespread protests across the Meitei-dominated valley, after it was confirmed that two youngsters from the community who had been missing since July had been killed. During that period of unrest, many students had suffered serious injuries in the crackdown by security forces against their protests, and a large number of protesters had also tried to storm Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s private residence.
