Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday announced the appointment of three-member committee of former judges to extend guidance on extending reservation to Maratha community as well as to battle the ongoing case in the Supreme Court.
Chairing the meeting of a cabinet sub-committee on Maratha reservation on Monday, where Justice (Retired) Sandeep Shinde committee — formed to study the procedure of giving Kunbi (OBC) certificate to Marathas — presented its first report of 13-pages, the CM said, “The Shinde committee till now has checked 1.73 crore records where 11,530 Kunbi records have been found.”
The report will be tabled in front of the state cabinet on Tuesday where it will be accepted, the CM said, adding that the state government has been giving Kunbi certificate to Marathas with documents since 1967 and the present government was continuing with it.
Deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar were absent from the meeting. Fadnavis is busy with election campaign in Chhattisgarh while Ajit Pawar is down with dengue.
The report has detailed district-wise number of records scrutinised and action taken by the Shinde committee. The CM added that the committee is also in the process of translating Urdu and Modi language records.
“We are committed to extend reservation, which will survive the test of law. A three-member committee of retired justices Bhosle (Dilip), Gaikwad (Maroti) and Shinde (Sandeep) will be formed that will assist the state government on extending reservation as well as to fight the ongoing curative petition in the Supreme Court,” he said, adding that a meeting of the task force of senior lawyers formed to fight the case will soon be held while State Backward Class Commission chairman Anand Nirgude will study the reasons given by the Supreme Court while rejecting the Maratha reservation.

Shinde appealed to Manoj Jarange Patil, who is on fast unto death demanding reservation for the community, to take medical treatment as the government was worried about his health. “We have gathered here to take decision but we cannot take it instantly as it should be within the legal framework and should sustain in the court,” he said.
Apart from Shinde, the cabinet sub-committee on Maratha reservation meeting was attended by committee head and Higher and Technical Education minister Chandrkant Patil, Revenue Minister Rashakrishna Vikhe-Patil, Rural Development Minister Girish Mahajan, Industries Minister Uday Samant, MSRDC Minister Dada Bhuse, State Excise Minister Shambhuraj Desai, School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar and Cooperation Minister Dilip Walse-Patil.
Along with the political leaders, Justice (Retired) Sandeep Shinde, Chairman of State Backward Class Commission Justice (Retired) Anand Nirgude, legislators Praveen Darekar, Yogesh Kadam, Bharat Gogawale, Narendra Patil (Chairman, Annasaheb Patil Economically Backward Class Development Corporation), Advocate General Birendra Saraf and Chief Secretary Manoj Saunik were also present.
