With just 62 slots left, the registration of fuel-based two-wheelers in Chandigarh may close for the year on Friday. A ban will then come into force on registration of fuel-based two-wheelers in accordance with the Electric Vehicle Policy of Chandigarh.

The Chandigarh administration, in view of the festive season and protests by two-wheeler traders, had on October 18, allowed an additional 10 per cent two-wheelers to be registered in the city beyond the cap of 12,076 for the year.

Out of the additional 10 per cent registrations, which roughly works out to 1,609 two-wheelers, around 1,547 have already been allotted registration numbers as of Thursday morning, according to the data supplied by the Registration and Licencing Authority of Chandigarh.

As per the EV Policy, a target has been set to allow only a specific percentage of fuel-based vehicles to be registered. Once the target is met, only electric two-wheelers can be registered.

However, electric two-wheelers are costlier and Chandigarh lacks proper infrastructure to facilitate them.

2500 families, 10,000 lives affected

Festive offer

Automobile dealers of Chandigarh have termed the move to cap the number of registrations unjust in the wake of the festive season. They said that not just did every trader suffer losses worth Rs 2 crore on an average for the stock they had purchased which will remain unsold, 2,500 families will be affected by the move.

“There are 2,500 employees and everyone, if on an average has four members, as many as 10,000 lives will be affected. They won’t get a bonus and they will lose their jobs,” a dealer said, requesting anonymity.

He added, “I still have over 150 two-wheelers in my stock and most of the people had booked them for Dhanteras. What will they do now? It will be a black Diwali this time.”

There are about 15 automobile dealers in the city, who together sell around 20,000 fuel-based two-wheelers each year, with an approximate 1,600 units being sold each month. During the festive season, the monthly sales jump to around 4,000.

For fuel-based four-wheelers, the administration had given a 13 per cent relaxation over the cap set for the financial year, which works out to around 1,500 more such vehicles being registered for the year.
