Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan on Thursday refused to meet state Congress president Ajay Rai in the Sitapur district jail, citing a ceiling on the number of visits an inmate is entitled to in the prison, officials claimed.
Meanwhile, Rai alleged that it was the Sitapur district administration that did not let a party delegation led by him meet Khan due to state government pressure.

Jail Superintendent Suresh Kumar Singh said, “In 15 days, an inmate is allowed to meet visitors twice. Mr Azam Khan has already used up one visit for the current fortnight and said that he would like to meet his family members for the second visit. I have conveyed this to the district Congress president.”
Rai said, “The administration and jail staff can say anything. What is the proof of this? Has Khan given this in writing? He is a prisoner and they can get him to say whatever they want. They did not let us meet him due to pressure from the government. The local administration had started creating hurdles for the meeting since yesterday. These are all lies.”
The announcement by Rai to meet Azam in jail had come amid an ongoing bickering between the SP and the Congress after the two INDIA bloc members failed to reach a seat-sharing arrangement for the coming Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh.
