As part of its flagship ‘Ab Dilli Hogi Saaf’ campaign, the AAP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi had recognised 158 Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) that need to be cleaned. But only 50% of GVPs have been cleaned so far, Mayor Shelly Oberoi said Monday. These points were set to be cleared by the first week of October.
Extending the deadline till Diwali, Oberoi said the elimination of GVPs is the corporation’s ‘Diwali Gift’ to the citizens of Delhi. “About 50% of Delhi’s 158 GVPs have been cleared; the remaining points will be cleared within the next 20 days,” Oberoi said in a statement Monday.
Out of the 158 GVPs, 11 were found in the Central Zone; 15 in Shahdara South Zone;13 in Karol Bagh; and 10 each in Shahdara North, Keshav Puram, Najafgarh, Narela, West and South Zone. Meanwhile, a maximum of 37 GVPs were found in Rohini zone, and 22 in Civil Lines zone.
Urging citizens to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings, Oberoi said, “During Diwali we clean our houses, similarly it’s our duty to keep our Delhi clean… the MCD and councillors will work in this regard, but we need equal contribution from citizens also.”

“All garbage vulnerable points in Delhi will be cleaned within 8 days,” Oberoi had earlier claimed on September 29, adding that “Delhi will soon get rid of garbage piles on streets…158 garbage vulnerable points have been recognised in all 12 zones…These will be cleaned within 8 days.”
To avoid re-collection of garbage at these points, MCD’s Department of Environment Management Services officials have been instructed to regularly monitor sites.
Meanwhile, MCD opposition leader and former Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh criticised Oberoi and alleged the AAP has turned Delhi into a garbage capital. “There are 40% unauthorised colonies in Delhi where garbage dumps are causing severe problems. Garbage dumps are scattered in various places in the city, such as empty plots, roadsides, under flyovers, alleys, parks,” Singh said in his press statement.
