Accusing the previous Samajwadi Party government of having the sole agenda of destroying monuments of Dalit icons, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Thursday said his government shown respect to the founding father of the Constitution by making it mandatory for all government offices to have a photo of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar.
Addressing the Dalit Varga Sammelan at Exhibition Ground in Aligarh, Adityanath said before the double-engine government of the BJP came to power at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh, people belonging to the Dalit community had an identity crisis and were “being persecuted at the behest of the then SP government”.

“Dalits were only used as vote banks, but this perception changed after the double-engine government came to power. Every government office has a photo of Babasaheb. The BJP government has ensured that Dalits get a full-proof security. A centre dedicated to Babasaheb will be opened in Lucknow soon, while a number of projects are underway in Varanasi to highlight sacrifices made by Sant Ravidas to uplift the community,” he said.
The chief minister further said, “Before 2017, there were restrictions on taking out shobha yatra (processions) by members of the Dalit community and the scholarship providing monetary help to meritorious students for higher studies was withdrawn. We not only restarted the scholarship, but also ensured our Dalit brothers get the respect and honour they deserve, but were denied by the previous SP government.”
Adityanath praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to transforming the places associated with Babasaheb into revered pilgrimage sites. “All these locations have been established as Panch Tirtha,” the chief minister added.
