The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has issued a diktat to make Aadhaar card mandatory for participants in garba and dandiya festivities during the nine-day Navratri festival in Maharashtra and India.
VHP joint General secretary Surendra Jain on Sunday told the press in Mumbai, “Every individual participating in festival revelry should be subjected to thorough scrutiny to ascertain his/ her Hindu identity.”
The nine-day garba and dandiya dance is part of festive rituals in Maharashtra. During the festival, boys and girls, men and women come together for garba and dandiya. Traditionally, it is a folk dance performed to worship Goddess Durga. Over the years, the dance form has undergone change and is organised commercially on a larger scale.
Addressing the press at Dadar on Sunday, Jain said, “Festival organisers should make Aadhaar card compulsory to verify credentials of participants. They should apply tilak (red vermillion) on the forehead and tie kalva (sacred red thread) on the wrist.”
The VHP leader said these safeguards have been necessitated to avoid ‘love jihad’. While cautioning about growing incidents of love jihad, Jain said, “Those who don’t have faith in the Hindu religion should not be allowed to take part in celebrations. The safety of our women is a must.”
