Microsoft has finally started restricting users from activating their Windows 11 OS using Windows 7 or Windows 8 activation keys. Microsoft has finally patched a loophole and does not authorise older activation codes, which means, one needs to buy a new license to use the latest Microsoft operating system on a custom PC build.
Just a month ago, Microsoft confirmed that it is ending a free installation path for Windows 11 using activation keys from Windows 7/8 OS on its device partner blog. However, if you have a PC running on Windows 10, you can still continue to upgrade to Windows 11 for free, given the system meets all the hardware requirements.

According to a report from The Verge, while one can still install a fresh copy of Windows 11 OS using a Windows 7 activation key, the same build will not be activated, which will leave an activate Windows watermark on the home screen stating “We can’t activate Windows on this device because you don’t have a valid digital license or product key.”
If you have already converted your Windows 7/8 activation code into a digital key, you should be able to activate Windows 11 without any issues.
This is something that will not affect many people, as most new laptops now ship with Windows 11 OS. This will be a hassle for those, who plan to build a new custom PC and want to activate Windows 11 without paying for the license. On top of that, Microsoft is also said to be working on the next iteration of its operating system — Windows 12, which is expected to debut in the first half of 2024, and is said to follow a subscription model.
